Dr. Johanna Contreras: Pregnancy & Cardiovascular Health | Heart Association

Heart Disease Remains Leading Cause of U.S. Maternal Deaths, Particularly Affecting Hispanic Women

American Heart Association Volunteer Expert Dr. Johanna Contreras Shares New Research on How Pregnancy Can Affect Cardiovascular Health and Tips on Reducing Risks

Studies have shown that women with a history of pregnancy complications (such as preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes) tend to have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease later in life. But the good news is one can reduce their risk by maintaining optimal heart health before, during and after pregnancy.

Despite the dangers, many women do not know about cardiovascular disease including its symptoms and top contributing factors. With better awareness, women can make healthier choices to lower their risk for a heart attack, stroke and other heart-related problems.

Over one-third of Hispanic women are living with cardiovascular disease, and in recent years, their mortality rate has jumped sharply. In interviews on May 7th, American Heart Association Volunteer Expert Dr. Johanna Contreras will share key findings from a new report and tips on how women can take charge of their heart health today. She can also discuss stats and facts of heart disease and how it affects the Hispanic community.
