We interrupt your steamy summer to talk wrestling because we have a number of Lowco grapplers representing team South Carolina at the U.S. Marine Corps 16U and Junior Nationals up in Fargo, North Dakota, and one of them has already secured some hardware.
Hilton Head High phenom Zao Estrada claimed the silver medal in the Junior Girls 112-pound weight class, winning her first six matches without allowing a single point before dropping a 13-5 decision to Florida’s Claire Booe in the final. Another terrific performance from a world-class athlete right in our backyard, and she brought some friends for the journey. Teammate Caroline Gilstrap finished 3-2 in the 138-pound bracket and reached the round of 16 before her first setback, and Reverence Wrestling Club’s Vivian Uriolla also picked up a win.
The guys are up next with Hilton Head’s William Jakeway and Bluffton Bobcats Brad Denmark and Oscar Dircio taking to the mat.
Back to a traditional summer sport, the Hilton Head 10-and-under all-stars are still in the fight despite a setback at the Dixie Youth Baseball Minors State Tournament in Clemson. The Island Boys breezed to a 13-3 win in their opener against St. George but were dealt a 9-4 defeat at the hands of Greer Navy on Sunday. They’ll face North Augusta in an elimination game tonight.
And the Hilton Head Sharks opened their season by hosting the South Carolina Gators out of Hartsville on Saturday for the Lowcountry Championship Bowl. Quarterback Vinny Luka and running back Jarvis Singleton found the end zone for the Sharks, but the Gators pulled away in the second half for a 40-12 win.
