Food Insecurity & Hunger in Our Community
Hunger is an issue that affects millions of people across the United States, including right here in our own community.
Hunger Action Month is a nationwide campaign dedicated to raising awareness about food insecurity and taking meaningful action to combat it. More than 21,000 of our neighbors are food insecure, and one in five children in Beaufort County, and 3 in 10 in Jasper County live in poverty.
Registrations to shop in The Market at Bluffton Self Help were up 28% in August over last August.
How can you help?
Spreading awareness, holding a drive, donating financially, contributing most-needed items, and supporting school snacks programs.
SPREAD AWARENESS
The first step in addressing any problem is to raise awareness, and that’s where you can make a significant impact. Share information about Hunger Action Month and Bluffton Self Help on your social media platforms, in your community, and among your friends and family. The more people who know about the issue of hunger in our area and the work being done to combat it, the more likely we are to see positive change.
HOST A DRIVE
Hosting a food drive is a tangible way to help those in need. Coordinate with your neighborhood, pickle ball team, school, or workplace to set up collection points for non-perishable food items. Canned goods, pasta, rice, and other shelf-stable items are always in demand. Encourage others to participate by making it a friendly competition or a team-building activity. Then, deliver the collected items to The Market at Bluffton Self Help to directly benefit neighbors experiencing hunger.
DONATE FINANCIALLY
Financial donations are a vital source of support programs at Bluffton Self Help. They enable the organization to purchase fresh produce, meat, and other essentials, ensuring that individuals and families receive a balanced and nutritious diet. Consider making a one-time or recurring donation to Bluffton Self Help during Hunger Action Month. Your contribution, no matter how small, can have a significant impact on the lives of those facing food insecurity.
MOST NEEDED ITEMS
Bluffton Self Help has a monthly list of specific items that are in high demand. These items can vary depending on the season and the immediate needs of the community. Check out this month’s most needed items and consider adding a few to your grocery list this month. Whether it’s diapers, hygiene products, or groceries your donations will directly benefit those who need them most.
SCHOOL SNACKS
Hunger can be especially challenging for children, as it affects their ability to concentrate and learn in school. Bluffton Self Help runs a school snack program in all ten Bluffton schools, providing nutritious snacks to children. Consider donating healthy snacks such as granola bars, fruit chips, or crackers to support this initiative. Ensuring that children have access to proper nutrition can help break the cycle of poverty and food insecurity.
