2nd Annual Gullah Geechee Corridor Heritage Celebration
This annual celebration highlights the unique culture and heritage of the Gullah Geechee people living in our corridor, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and beyond!
Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 10am - 4pm at The Historic Arsenal, 713 Craven Street, Beaufort, SC
This street fest will feature live performances from the Geechee Gullah Ring Shouters of Darien, GA, Deninufay African Dance and Drum Co. of Charleston, SC, Folk Artist Bruce Ingram of Conway, SC, Aunt Pearlie Sue and the Gullah Kinfolk of Beaufort, SC, singers Latrese Bush of Atlanta, GA, Kristen Jamison of Orangeburg, SC, and Mahagonee of Beaufort, SC, along with art workshops, live musical performances, book talks, food trucks, a cultural food demonstration by Chef BJ Dennis, and more!
We will also feature a Kids Corner in collaboration the Beaufort County Library; including a book talk with Dawn Boren, author of Stories of the Gullah Geechee children series, Aunt Pearlie Sue and Storytime, an Art mural project with Artist Amiri Farris, a talk with a 9-year old kidprenuer, and snow-cones!!
Booktalks will be hosted in the Beaufort History Museum, 713 Craven Street, on the second floor
This event will be hosted by Sunn m’Cheaux, Professor of Gullah Language Studies at Harvard University.
