At the July 20, 2017 Rotary Club of Hilton Head Meeting, President Karen Cully announced that the club would be raising $50,000 to provide for a second Gym at the newly renovated and expanded Island Recreation Center.  The new addition will provide for additional activities for families in our community as well as serving as the Rec Center’s athletic programming gymnasium and be available for tournaments and competitions.

Executive Director of Island Rec Association, Frank Soule, and past president of Island Rec Association Board of Directors, Alan Perry, shared the long history that the Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island has had with the center which began in 1977 with the club raising funds for the Island Youth Center.  Funds were raised by the Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island in the 1980s for construction of a new building dedicated in 1988.  Rotary assisted in the opening of the Senior Center which is now a part of Island Recreation.  President Karen Cully stated “The Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island is about making a difference in our community. This community center will provide programs for the entire community.  Through this grant we are assisting in this vision”. The Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island not only helps with funding but supports the efforts of Island Recreation by providing volunteers to serve as marshals at the marathons and the Firecracker Run and other events.
