Town of Bluffton Breaks Ground on the Wright Family Park Tuesday, August 20/9 a.m.

August 14, 2o19, Bluffton, S.C. – The Town of Bluffton welcomes residents and business owners to join Town leaders and staff as they celebrate the groundbreaking of Wright Family Park, August 20 at 9 a.m. at 111 Calhoun Street. All are welcome to this event.

The property, situated at the south end of Calhoun Street, on the river adjacent to the Calhoun Street Public Dock and across the street from Church of the Cross, is both historically and culturally significant. The Squire Pope Carriage House, built circa 1850, sits on the property and is one of the very few structures in the Bluffton Historic District to survive the 1863 “Burning of Bluffton” by the Union Army during the Civil War.

The park is designed to give residents and visitors a passive park and to provide additional public access to the May River. The park improvements include 28 parking spaces, improved drainage, new sidewalks, landscaping, lighting and site furnishings. Park construction is expected to begin in late August and completed by late fall.

In addition to the park improvements, the Town will also rehabilitate the Squire Pope Carriage House, similar to the Town’s Garvin-Garvey House rehabilitation which is located at nearby Oyster Factory Park. Construction on the Regional Calhoun Street Dock is expected to begin in early 2020.
