June 28, 2019, Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Visiting Coligny Beach Park will be a little easier thanks to the Town of Hilton Head Island’s new park and ride service. To help alleviate traffic on the busy Pope Avenue Corridor and ease congestion at its Coligny Beach parking lot, the Town is offering the complimentary shuttle service during peak visitor times on weekends and holidays through the remainder of the summer.
Starting Saturday, June 29, a Palmetto Breeze shuttle will pick up guests at the University of South Carolina-Beaufort’s (USCB) Hilton Head Island campus, 1 Sand Shark Drive, and drop them off at Coligny Beach Park, one of the island’s most popular beach spots. The free service will operate on a continuous loop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day. After 1 p.m., guests will be able to ride the regularly scheduled Breeze Trolleys, which picks up guests from Coligny Beach Park and other locations on the island. The shuttle service will also be available next week on Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5.
“With this new service, we hope to ease traffic in the Coligny area, maximize the opportunity to provide free parking during the busy summer months, and create a safe environment for all of our visitors,” said Scott Liggett, Director of Public Projects and Facilities for the Town.
Town staff and security officers will monitor the parking lot on the weekends and holidays and help direct visitors to USCB when the lot becomes full. Also, the Town will place an electronic message board in the median on Pope Avenue near Office Park Road to alert motorists of available overflow parking at the USCB campus.
